A Christmas message from Mikhail Grachev, SmartLabs CEO

As the year draws to a close, it’s a time to spend with friends and family, to reflect on 2021 and look forward with excitement as we welcome 2022.

The past 12 months have been a roller coaster ride. The pandemic has continued to disrupt our supply chain. Hardware has been subject to massive delays, and continued uncertainty has restricted investment. But there are signs of recovery in the supply chain, which is excellent news. We welcome these improvements with open arms and hope that 2022 will be a prosperous year for all of us.

For almost two years now, we have deeply missed the quality face-to-face time of major trade shows. We know how important events are for sharing new ideas and building relationships. But we have adapted to make virtual events work, as there is still so much exciting development in our industry to discuss.

At SmartLabs, we have seen excellent growth this year, particularly in Latin America and Asia. From a subscriber point of view, demand for online entertainment continues to grow globally. But competition is fierce. As we move forward in 2022, our industry faces some big questions:

Consolidation

An explosion of online services has provided more choices for subscribers. In some territories, subscribers are engaging with 10-15 providers simultaneously to watch what they want. We think the industry needs to find ways to improve the consumer experience and simplify content consumption. Migration to super aggregation and subscriber bundling may be part of the solution.

From a technology point of view, we expect the future development of Android TV platforms and increased interest in the RDK alternative for some service provider segments.

Monetization

Finding ways to protect and increase revenue is imperative. Loyalty is crucial and we are working closely with our customers to provide the software and hardware to help them resell content more effectively and improve user retention.

Technology can enable service providers to sell advertising breaks several times, providing additional revenue. We are currently engaging in many projects with our SmartLabs Dynamic Ad Insertion solution and expect to develop this further next year, with a range of service providers.

I wish for everyone that both our work and personal lives will be as normal as possible in 2022. Our team looks forward to seeing you at a trade event soon in the US, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. There is so much to talk about in our exciting industry as we move into the New Year and we look forward to connecting with you soon.
