IPTV/OTT Platform Migration Without Replacing Set-Top Boxes
Move off legacy middleware — you name it — onto a modern multi-screen platform, on the set-top boxes you already deployed.
Why operators come to Smartlabs for migration
Most pay-TV migration projects fail or stall for the same reason: replacing the deployed STB fleet is too expensive, too disruptive, or both. A typical Tier-2 operator with 200,000 subscribers is looking at about $10M in hardware capex alone before factoring in logistics, returns, and call-center load. That's before subscribers ever see a new feature.
Smartlabs has built its migration practice around solving this specific problem. Our SmartTUBE client runs on legacy STBs from virtually every major manufacturer — including devices whose original vendor has gone out of business or stopped maintaining firmware. Operators move to a modern platform without sending a single technician to a single subscriber's home.
Over 1 million subscribers have been migrated through Smartlabs projects across Europe, the Baltics, the Balkans, the Caucasus, and beyond.
Migration success stories
Smartlabs has migrated operators of every size, on every type of legacy infrastructure. A representative sample:
| Operator | Country | What we migrated |
|---|---|---|
| O2 Czech Republic | Czech Republic | World's first migration of bespoke Linux STBs to Android TV — without device swap |
| StarNet | Moldova | Legacy IPTV platform replaced with SmartTUBE multi-screen, entire subscriber base migrated remotely |
| Baltcom | Latvia | Subscribers migrated to SmartTUBE 5 without swapping legacy STBs and without any engineer visits to subscribers' homes |
| BazePort | Norway / global maritime | Customised AOSP software for SML-5051W and SML-5041W devices — Linux to Android migration in the field |
| Ucom | Armenia | Full legacy STB fleet supported on the new platform — zero device replacement, full Uplay launch on existing hardware |
"Our subscribers are enjoying new features, without the need to replace their STBs. The whole project, covering implementation and migration of back-end systems, with no downtime, was short and efficient."

Migrate vs Replace: the economics
For most operators, the financial case is decisive on its own. A side-by-side view:
| Replace the fleet | Migrate with Smartlabs | |
|---|---|---|
| CapEx | >$50 per subscriber × fleet size | Software-only |
| Logistics | New devices shipped, old devices collected, recycled | None |
| Truck rolls | One per subscriber for installation and support | Zero — fully remote OTA |
| Subscriber action required | Schedule visit, swap device, reconfigure | None — service updates overnight |
| Time to launch | 12–18 months | 3–6 months |
| Risk | Service interruption, hardware shortage, returns logistics | Phased rollout with rollback at every stage |
| Subscriber retention impact | Churn spike during swap period | Transparent transition |

Why Smartlabs over the alternatives
Most operators weighing a migration look at MediaKind (the successor to Mediaroom), Synamedia, Vewd (formerly Wyplay), AlphaOTT, and MwareTV alongside Smartlabs. Three things differentiate Smartlabs in migration projects specifically:
Legacy STB capability nobody else has. We are the only middleware vendor with an in-house hardware lab dedicated to reverse engineering and supporting legacy STBs at the chipset level. This is the deciding factor when an operator's fleet includes devices from a vendor that no longer exists.
Single vendor for the full stack. SmartTUBE (middleware), SmartMEDIA (CDN and streaming), SmartCARE (analytics and monitoring), SmartTUBE Apps (native multi-screen) — one team, one roadmap, one accountability line. No multi-vendor integration risk during a migration project.
A services company as well as a product company. Many vendors sell software and walk away. Smartlabs delivers professional services — including custom client development, reverse engineering, and integration with operator-specific billing, CAS, and OSS/BSS systems. This is also why MediaKind chose Smartlabs as its global partner for IPTV/OTT migration projects.
New device options (for the part of the fleet you do choose to upgrade)
Migration doesn't have to mean keeping every legacy device forever. For subscribers who do need new hardware, or for gradual fleet upgrades, Smartlabs supplies:
Android TV devices — 4K HDR, voice control, Google app store, Chromecast built-in.
Linux set-top boxes — optimized performance, lower cost per device, long-term support.
Multi-screen apps — iOS, Android, Apple TV, Roku, Fire TV, Smart TV (Samsung, LG, Hisense), and web.

Frequently asked questions
Can Smartlabs migrate operators using set-top boxes from vendors that have gone out of business?
Yes. This is one of the most common reasons operators come to us. Our engineering team has reverse-engineering capabilities at the firmware and chipset level, and we maintain an in-house hardware lab specifically for working with end-of-life devices. In most cases we can build a custom SmartTUBE client for unsupported STBs without the original vendor's involvement.
Which legacy IPTV middleware platforms have you migrated from?
Operators have moved to Smartlabs from Microsoft Mediaroom, Wyplay (Vewd), Beenius, Minerva, NDS/Synamedia, Cisco Videoscape, and a wide range of custom in-house Linux middleware built by operators themselves. If your current platform is not on this list, contact us — chances are we have worked with similar technology.
How long does a typical platform migration take?
Most projects run 3 to 6 months from kick-off to full deployment, depending on fleet size, number of legacy STB models, integration complexity (billing, CAS, OSS/BSS), and pilot phase length. Replacing a fleet, by comparison, typically runs 12 to 18 months.
Will subscribers experience downtime during migration?
No. Migration is delivered as an OTA firmware update during off-peak hours. Subscribers wake up to the new platform with their accounts, viewing history, recordings, and subscriptions intact. The Baltcom project, for example, completed migration without any engineer visits to subscribers' homes.
Do existing nPVR recordings survive the migration?
Yes. Recordings are migrated to the new cloud DVR format with playback compatibility preserved. Viewing history, parental controls, favourite channel lists, and other personalization data are also carried over per subscriber profile.
Can we run the legacy platform and Smartlabs in parallel during the transition?
Yes. The standard Smartlabs migration approach uses a phased rollout: pilot, then incremental expansion, then full migration. Both platforms run in parallel during the rollout window, and rollback is possible at every stage if anomalies are detected.
What about subscribers who do want a new device?
For subscribers who request new hardware — or for gradual fleet upgrades through normal attrition — Smartlabs supplies its own Android TV and Linux set-top boxes, as well as native applications for iOS, Android, Apple TV, Roku, Fire TV, Smart TVs, and web. You decide the pace.
How does Smartlabs compare to MediaKind, Synamedia, or Vewd for migration projects?
The two practical differentiators are legacy STB support and end-to-end ownership. Most large vendors will require fleet replacement or partial replacement; we can preserve the entire fleet. And because Smartlabs delivers middleware, CDN, monitoring, and apps as a single product suite from a single team, operators avoid the multi-vendor integration risk that often delays migration projects. MediaKind chose Smartlabs as its global partner for IPTV/OTT migration projects for exactly these reasons.
